Studio
Working from a home based studio on Banks Peninsula, Jane’s studio overlooks historic Lyttelton port town, and the Port Hills. Lyttelton Harbour is situated in a stunning, naturally formed, extinct volcanic cauldron. Jane works with mid fire stoneware clays and creates batches of thrown pieces and multiple series of handbuilt forms. Her pieces are supplied to multiple galleries throughout NZ.
Hand Built Forms
Soft clay is textured using either bas relief or hand carved, then bisqued clay or cast plaster stamps. The clay is then stretched to create fluid surface textures. The prepared clay slabs dry slightly and are then constructed into various forms. Favourite series often revisited are boat forms, apertures and vessels.
Mandalas
Circular geometric forms derived from Buddhist Mandalas. Mandalas in old Sanskrit translate in their circular form: wholeness, togetherness, one. Jane has led groups of people to participate in leaving their own individual “transient” marks collectively in Mandala forms on beaches, walls and city streets.
Apertures
Usually hand built from textured clay slabs, these free standing forms have a central aperture, inviting the viewer to look through.
Thrown Forms
Harbour Rim Vessels are thrown on the pottery wheel using a mix of recycled stoneware clays. Each batch tends to vary depending on the mix of recycled clays. There are a range of sizes thrown onto individual batts and slips are applied whilst on the pottery wheel. They are dried carefully before bisque firing and then a range of glazes are applied before high firing. Harbour Rim beakers are made using porcelain clay which renders a much whiter surface for applying the glazes, resulting in a more vibrant palette suggesting landscapes/seascapes.
